March 4, 1995, Jack's Mountain. The experience of a lifetime: my first mountain flight. What a wonder it was. Unbeknownst to any of us at the time, during that same month a six week period would begin in which four of our fellow pilots would be hopitalized for injuries sustained while flying. Three of the four are no longer flying. Tragically, one of the four is not yet able to return home. I had occasion recently to roam through past issues of Skyline. Chills ran down my spine as I came across the issues for the spring of '95 and I began to recover the details of these tragedies. I was such a young pilot at the time; I grasp the events differently today than I did then. Several things seem evident. First, the excellent discourse that took place has not lost its relevance. Second, maybe there's new insight that could be shared-- a bit of perspective that can more easily be expressed and/or dealt with now that time has passed. And third, perhaps our newest generation of pilots is not even aware of this season in our history and by becoming informed might be spared its repetition. What follows are articles reprinted from the newletters during the spring of '95. There's space here to open a forum for a continuing discussion in the form of articles or thoughts submitted for inclusion. Send to me at judymcc@ix.netcom.com. --Judy McCarty-- |
